Victoria (1819 - 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for 63 years, known as Victorian era, from 1837 to 1901. It was a period of unprecedented industrial and scientific development, and a great expansion of the British Empire. Her Diamond Jubilee was made a festival of British Empire. The Queen's Diamond Jubilee procession on 22nd June 1897 followed a route six miles long through London and included troops from all over the empire. Queen Victoria in her open carriage was greeted by vast crowds of spectators and great outpouring of affection for the 78-year-old Queen.
John Bartholomew (1831 - 1893) was a Scottish cartographer. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, to John Bartholomew Sr., and later succeeded father in his cartographical business. John Bartholomew became known for development of colour contouring (or hypsometric tints), the system of representing altitudes on a graduated colour scale, which became a standard cartographical practice. Bartholomew built up a reputation for the production of the finest maps and atlases.
George Newnes (1851 - 1910) was a founder of a British publishing company George Newnes Ltd. He was considered a founding father of popular journalism. Newnes published magazines and periodicals, such as Tit-Bits, The Wide World Magazine, The Captain, The Strand Magazine, Woman's Own and other.
