Hans Thoma (1839 - 1924) was a German painter. He was a son of a miller and studied lithography before switching to painting and studying in Karlsruhe academy. After the academy Thoma travelled and worked in other European cities with varying degree of success, before finally establishing himself in Munich. From 1890 he had numerous exhibitions and became a director of a gallery and professor of arts at the art academy in Karlsruhe. He produced a vast amount of work in paintings, lithographs, pen drawings and murals. By 1910, Hans Thoma became one of the most respected painters in Germany.
