Ammonia Scavenger Created when amino groups are removed from amino acids, high nitrogen levels pose toxic traits; therefore, nitrogen is reduced through ammonia synthesis due to its properties as a cofactor. Production of ammonia, NH3, is also seen through the gluconeogenesic transition of amino acids to glucose and in the GI tract during protein digestion. Ammonia, toxic to the central nervous system, is predominately eliminated through the Urea Cycle.

Researchers believe genetic mutations found in the CBS, BHMT, MTHFR, MTR/MTRR, PEMT/BHMT, SUOX and NOS genes are thought to increase NH3 levels and reduce Urea Cycle function.2 The responsibility to neutralize excessive ammonia, due to an inhibited Urea Cycle, is met by the utilization of BH4.
