Exceptionally rare engraved and hand-coloured print from "Surgical-anatomical illustrations for physicians and surgeons" (Chirurgisch-anatomische Abbildungen fur Aertze und Wundarzte) by J.C. Rosenmuller, published in 1807 in Weimar, Germany.
Johann Christian Rosenmuller (1771 – 1820) was a prominent German anatomist. He was a son of a theologian and studied at both Leipzig and Erlangen universities. In 1794 he was appointed a Prosector (a person preparing dissections for lectures and demonstrations) at the anatomical institute in Leipzig and later became a professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Leipzig, a position he held until his death in 1820. He was first to describe Rosenmuller's fossa, Rosenmuller's gland, and Rosenmuller's organ, all named appropriately after him. Apart from anatomy, he was an avid speleologist and, after examining a set of discovered bones, gave a binomial name to the extinct bear Ursus spelaeus. Rosenmuller published several works on anatomy, surgery and speleology.
