An article in the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Herald on 4 December 1926 sums up the excitement surrounding an appearance by Edwin J. McEnelly's Orchestra:
There will be plenty of travel over all roads leading into Portsmouth Monday evening as the last dance of the season by the McEnelly orchestra is scheduled at that time in Freeman's hall and a record crowd is assured. The balcony patrons are advised to come early and hear the entire concert and stay long enough to hear some of McEnelly's latest dance compositions.
NOTE:--Leave request at box office for orchestra to play your favorite musical number.
Once touted as the "Toast of New England," violinist Edwin J. McEnelly led a popular dance orchestra for forty years. He hired top musicians from the ranks of such notable bands as the California Ramblers and Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, and he quickly earned a reputation for his band's creative and distinctive arrangements. From his base at the Butterfly Ballroom in Springfield, Massachusetts, McEnelly and his band toured the Eastern Seaboard in the 1920s playing dances and competing in "battles of the bands" (famously beating the Jean Goldkette band on one occasion). The band achieved national recognition through its regular radio broadcasts on station WBZ and a handful of records made between 1925 and 1929.
This revised and expanded 2020 edition of McEnelly's complete recordings features brand new audio restorations from original sources, remastered with sparkling clarity. The accompanying full color 32-page booklet by Bryan S. Wright features a substantial essay containing a detailed history of the band with commentary and full discographical information for each of the recordings. Many rare photographs, historic advertisements, and sheet music covers are also included. Features pianist Frankie Carle. 67 minutes.
