Story
When you look southwest from Tonquin Beach in Tofino, you see what appears to be one island, most people recognize as Wickaninnish. There is a narrow passage at high tide that separates Wickaninnish from Echachis Island. I’ve visited that place with my friend and carver Joe Martin.
One day as I watched the sunset colors over Echachis and listened to a raven talking, I was reminded of the Clayoquot people who were whalers in the old days.
Echachis means “rising” in the language of the locals. It was a place of waiting for whales, as well as a place to bring the whales to the beach to be divided among the people.
I love this place on the wild west coast and the many stories of people who live here and who have lived here.
