Charcoal should be in every household’s first aid kit, it is often used in Emergency Rooms to counteract the effects of poisoning from overdosing on medication, whether accidentally or intentionally. It has the ability to trap toxins including chemicals and other poisons so they cannot be absorbed by the body and eliminates them via the faeces.

As a general rule, charcoal can be taken 1g per Kg of body weight in critical situations. This also applies to animals – for example tick bites in dogs and cats or accidental poisoning etc. It is important to drink plenty of water when taking charcoal.

Activated charcoal is not useful in poisoning related to alcohol, cyanide, lithium or iron.

Dosage:
