Ruth and the Barley Harvest

by Rosemarie Adcock

The story of Ruth (c. 1140 BC) occurs during the period of the Judges, aptly described by the writer of the Book as a time when “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

The widow Ruth, a Moabitess, came with her widowed mother-in-law back to Israel after the death of their husbands. These women would have been destitute, and Ruth went out to look for fallen grain left behind by the Barley harvesters. The wealthy landowner, Boaz, took notice of her, and extended extraordinary kindness by protecting her, providing grain for her and her mother-in-law to eat, and eventually marrying her.

In all these mercies, the Bible portrays Boaz as the “Kinsman-Redeemer”, another “type” or symbol of Jesus, who redeems the undeserving and outcast by overwhelming mercy. Boaz is depicted with rich clothing and extending the ripened barley with his hand as he feeds one of his animals. Ruth wears blue, a symbol of purity used in ancient painting. She is barefoot, signifying her poverty and humility.

Remarkably, this woman of Gentile birth, received into the community of faith, would become the grandmother of David the King, who was in the direct lineage of Jesus Christ.

“The generations Abraham to David are 14 generations, David to the deportation to Babylon, 14 generations. From the deportation to Babylon to the time of Christ, 14 generations. Matthew 1:17

Ruth and the Barley Harvest received the 1st place award at the Jubilee Year of Mercy Exhibition

Comfortable and light!
Color: Brown, Size: Large
Wanted something that was going to be lightweight but had those longer sleeves because I do still get a tad chilly even on the warmer days. This is perfect, the fabric is lightweight and breathable, the loose cut around the waist adds to the top's "breathability," but it still keeps you cozy and warm on those chilly mornings! The brown is a lovely warm-coffee tone and it hasn't faded a bit in the wash. Very nice shirt to add to your collection!

looks nice, well made and styish.
This was a gift for a friend. It is well made, has a good modern style to it, comfortable to wear, she is taller, and it fits her well. Its a bit warm, so a fall kind of clothing option.

Great for layering or wearing on its own!
I’m 5’6” and ordered the small — it fits perfectly! The color is exactly as shown in the pictures, a beautiful beige that goes with everything. The fabric is incredibly soft and comfortable, making it great for layering or wearing on its own. I’m really happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend it!

Nice but not great
Fits true to size. I ordered a small and it was a great fit. Could be a bit softer. Loved the style. Not too thin or not heavy, nice weight. This quality of the sweater was nice, however the buttons broke apart as I was styling the cardigan. Not happy to have to sew on small buttons to fit the small holes. It’s nice but I had to put too much effort into wearing it.
