QUARTER (LOVE) NOTE

A Portrait of New Orleans’ French Quarter

by James Michalopoulos

THE PLACE

The French Quarter - where every day is festive - is the original urban hood, quaint by modern standards, timelessly magnetic, enriched by the heydays of cotton, sugar and its place at the mouth of the Mississippi, shaped by centuries of successive, additive waves of French, Spanish, Creole, African, American, Irish, German and Sicilian immigrants, entertained by the likes of Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Louis Prima, Chris Owens, Snooks Eaglin, Aaron and Charles Neville, Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty, Kermit Ruffins, marching bands and buskers, and inspiring works by William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, John Kennedy Toole and countless others. Incomparable magic preserved by the City that care for history did not forget.

THE PRINT

The French Quarter is a state of mind. A wavy-gravy surreal seventy square blocks tenuously tethered to the United States as a showcase of what a truly eternal, possible yet improbable, irreplaceable, authentic, livable US locale can be when left to its own organic evolution; perfectly human in scale & nature. A sensuous menagerie of diverse souls left to their own devices.

Music fills its streets with life’s perfect pitch, syncing to the heart beats of its denizens, psychic, physical and spiritual. Without it, and the city that grew around it, there would be no Jazz Fest, let alone the last bit of unhomogenized American bohemia - birthplace of America’s only native art form - jazz, man, jazz - and unique variations on R&B, Funk, Rap and more. The richest place in America by every non-fungible measure that counts.

THE ARTIST

It’s been a decade since James Michalopoulos last created a Jazz Fest print, the world’s most collected poster. He crafted some of the most coveted prints in the series, beginning with his deeply felt portraits of Dr. John (1998) and Louis Armstrong (2001), a print that sold out on the first day of that year’s Festival.

Michalopoulos is a habitué of the Quarter. He lives it, lives in it, embodies it and preserves it. He has depicted it for 50 years in ways that reveal its spiritual essence. In this print he elevates his vision of the Quarter through a prism of Escher and Kafka, offering it to us as a gift of transcendent inhabitable resonant memories. This ain’t no virtual reality. It’s unfettered real life filled with abstracted, angular archetypes in a place you’re lucky to dwell in if only for the blink of an eye. The avatar of your soul is in there somewhere, transmogrified. Seek it, embrace it & live it: Dancer, stroller, lover, friend, second liner, poseur, musician, observer, participant, dog walker, waiter, parader, driver, Mardi Gras Indian or just passing through.

This piece encapsulates the artist’s life work in a panorama of exquisite color and detail; instantly recognizable as his oeuvre yet more expansive than anything that preceded it. A masterwork beyond the borders of place and mind, bounded only by the frame that will display it on your wall. Shut your screens off! This is art, man, art.

Cheap, screw holes don't line up, screen is to short, and bars take WD-40 and a mallet
This has been my worst purchase on Amazon ever. DO NOT BUY. My first issue was that bars #4 and #5 would not go together, I ended up buying WD-40 and a mallet and that kind of got them together. Now I went to but the screen on (which is almost see thought) and the screen is to short. I can't attached the bottom bar to the tall bar. The screw hole is in the wrong spot, so the screen is not secure. No amount of pulling on the screen will make it grown .25" longer. Since I can't get the bars secure the walls are not steady and fall over easily. The feet did go together very nice. I can't return them according to Amazons policy. I bought 2 sets. I'm not going to try to build the other set I have. And I can't take apart the first set, since the bars are so tightly together. Also the polls have rust on them.

Very Poor Built Quality
Color: Black, Size: 3-Panel
They use cheap tarp like cloth that you might find on a tent, so it is not suitable as a teleconferencing background without blur applied. The legs are flimsy and lack rubber feet, so it will scratch floors. The tubing is flimsy and very hard to move and adjust. This is only good if you are setting it up somewhere like a gym or a garage.

Versatile Room Divider With Easy Assembly and Strong Coverage
Size: 3 Panel 12FT W
I picked up this Siebwin 3-panel folding room divider mainly for privacy and room separation, and overall it works very well. Assembly is very straightforward, and the divider can be set up, taken apart, and stored without much effort. The fabric quality feels good, and the frame construction is stronger and more stable than expected. The support tubes especially feel well built and help keep the divider standing securely. One feature I really liked is the flexibility of the design. The panels can be used together as a complete divider or separated depending on the setup and available space. That makes it much more versatile for different room layouts or temporary privacy needs. The coverage is also very good, and the size matches the manufacturer’s description accurately. The fabric blocks light and background visibility well enough to provide solid privacy without feeling overly heavy. The wider feet also help improve stability compared to thinner folding dividers. Another positive detail is that everything arrived complete with no missing parts or damaged pieces, which made assembly much easier and faster. Compared to cheaper privacy screens, this one feels more durable and easier to customize depending on the situation. In terms of value for the money, it feels like a very practical and worthwhile purchase considering the size, flexibility, and build quality. Overall, a versatile and well-built room divider with easy assembly, strong privacy coverage, stable construction, complete included parts, flexible panel configuration, and excellent everyday functionality.
